Ten student athletes from Section X participated in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) leadership conference in Albany recently, having the opportunity to meet, build connections and collaborate with student athletes across the state.
The event featured activities and discussions centered on leadership, service, sportsmanship and life beyond sports. Guest speakers and groups included Jeremy Thode, a 25-plus year educator and founder of Jonah’s Mission for Kids, who helps students, educators and families navigate the school experience; Steve Webb from Team Up 4 Community, promoting social responsibility and community giveback through athletics; a member of the New York Army National Guard; officials Louie Stellato and Bridget Bishop, presenting on building respect between athletes and officials; and Omari Pearson, founder of Passion To Purpose, a company that strengthens risk management while elevating social-emotional learning and assists students with college and career readiness.
Student athletes who were interested in attending the conference were required to submit an interest survey listing their school information, sports involvement, club participation and a section explaining how it would benefit their growth as a student athlete and a leader. Surveys were reviewed by NYSPHSAA officials and students were notified upon selection.
