Section X is proud to recognize the commitment and influence of its officials during Official Appreciation Days, a time to celebrate the individuals who devote their time and effort so student athletes can compete in interscholastic contests while promoting sportsmanship among athletes, coaches, administrators and spectators.
Approximately 120 officials serve across Section X’s winter sports. While officiating offers a financial benefit, most do it for the love of the game and to stay connected to a sport they once played or coached.
“Officials are the reason scrimmages, games and tournaments happen,” said Mark Wilson, Section X executive director. “They model sportsmanship, enforce rules and ensure a safe, fair environment for student athletes.”
Fred Lavack, a cross country and track and field official, is entering his 26th year of high school officiating. He has also officiated at the collegiate level since 2000 and joined USA Track and Field in 2009. Lavack ran and coached at Gouverneur in the 1980s and says the most rewarding part is being surrounded by the sport he loves.
“It’s never been about the money,” Lavack said. “I love giving back to cross country and track and field. These sports gave me opportunities I never would have had otherwise. I also get to officiate with my wife, who introduced me to the sport.”
Kevin Walbridge, a boys basketball official and president of board #47, has officiated for more than 20 years. A former player at Franklin Academy, North Country Community College and Utica University, Walbridge started officiating to stay involved with basketball. He values the camaraderie among officials.

“We have five meetings a year and a strong support system for new officials,” Walbridge said. Veterans are available for questions, and Section X does a great job mentoring young officials.”
Walbridge encourages others to try officiating. “There’s a negative connotation about referees, but don’t sell yourself short,” he said.
Section X encourages student athletes, families, coaches, administrators and the community to thank officials, not just during appreciation days, but every day for their time and dedication.
With a growing shortage of officials, Section X encourages anyone interested in making a difference in the student athlete experience to learn more by visiting the Section X website or contacting the Section X office.
To all Section X officials, thank you for your leadership, passion and commitment.
